Vacation

So I have been, and continue to be, on vacation in California at the moment, and there are a few things I want to say that are related to that fact.

Napa Valley

At this time of year, the Napa/Sonoma area is so, so completely relaxing. I had the great opportunity to spend memorial day weekend there, and it was quite possibly the best 2-day vacation I have ever had. In case anyone's interested, the best price-to-quality ratio wine I found easily has to be the La Mistral by Joeseph Phelps. It retails around $40, and, to my less-than-sophisticated pallet, tastes exactly like his Insignia wine. I believe, it was the 2005 vintage that I tasted. If you want to spend the big bucks, for around $80 you can pick up a bottle of the 2002 St. Supery Dollarhide Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2002 Silverado Solo, or the 2005 Silverado Fantasia. Out of that list I would specifically recommend the St. Supery. They also have a Dollarhide Sauvignon Blanc that is both fantastic and (being a white) a lot cheaper than the cab. Next time I go up to Napa Valley, I think I need at least a week to spend there, and also about $5,000.

College Hunting

Since I dragged my sister along with me to Napa Valley, she's dragging me along with here to look at grad schools. Today we took a tour of UCLA. It's a beautiful campus...looks a lot like BC actually. However, what I would consider its most attractive feature (for me, not my sister) is the population of "really, really, ridiculously good looking" women walking around campus. My brain has no regrets about having to gone to RIT for the past 4 years, but certain other parts of my anatomy have now moreso realized how much they would've rather gone to college elsewhere.

Diplomacy

One last thing to talk about is the pace of progress on Diplomacy. I may have mentioned in discussions with one of you that being on vacation would provide me with a decent amount of time to do some work on Diplomacy. Well, this time appears to be no different than every other time I think I'll be able to get some work done on it. I haven't even yet gotten a chance to lay out on a beach. I'll be sure to note in a post and also on the forum when I get some work done on the Rails version of Diplomacy. Until then, plans are moving along with regards to setting up an existing adjudicator to take PMs from you guys, and to post moves in the forum. This is one of those things that works out very well in my head, but I've yet to figure out exact implementation. Just the same, I don't expect this to be overly complicated to set up. I'll keep you guys posted on updates.

Site Launch

Welcome one and all to the CheezeNet. Amongst a few other things, this will be the page where I will be hosting my Ruby-on-Rails-ified version of the game Diplomacy. That, however, still has a significant amount of work to be done before I'll even put a buggy version up on the site. Until then, I invite you to look around what little is up of the site and post any feedback you have on overall design and layout. One thing, though: ignore the graphics. They are merely test graphics to get a feel of placement on the site. Most of them will be changed in time.

Pretty much the only operational portion of the site right now is the forums. Again, graphics are temporary, but overall color scheme and layout is probably how I am going to keep it.

If you want to help me out with the site, please feel free to shoot me an email. Very specific things I know I'll need help with are graphics work, and general web-fu. My code-fu may be strong, but my area of expertise is desktop apps, not web stuff. If you want to help with the code on the diplomacy game, though, I'd ask you to please wait until I release the first beta. If you have any other questions, I'd prefer you use the openness of the forum, but you can email me if you really want.
